The executive negotiates firmly with the right before the joint committee, convened on Monday

After the rejection motion which ended the debate on the immigration bill in the National Assembly, it is time for the joint committee (CMP). It will meet Monday at 5 p.m., announced this Wednesday the president of the law commission Sacha Houlié (Renaissance), who will chair it. The seven deputies and seven senators who will compose it will have to try to find a compromise.

But, without waiting, this body made up of seven deputies and as many senators “gets to work today” to “prepare” an agreement, explained the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, hoping that the law be definitively voted on “before the Christmas holidays”.

The president rules out the possibility of dissolution

For her part, Élisabeth Borne is increasing consultations, particularly with the right, which played a key role in the adoption of the rejection motion. The Prime Minister has canceled a trip abroad and is taking matters into her own hands. This Wednesday morning she receives LR party executives Éric Ciotti, Bruno Retailleau and Olivier Marleix. Gérald Darmanin, who is leading the project, will also be present during the discussions, after the snub in the Assembly. The head of government will then receive the heavyweights from the center and the majority.

During a dinner on Tuesday at the Elysée, the Head of State decided to play double or nothing with this CMP: either it is conclusive, or the text will simply be withdrawn, he informed the participants. And he also ruled out dissolving the Assembly in the event of failure, while the boss of the RN Jordan Bardella said he was already ready to assume the role of Prime Minister of cohabitation.
