The cost of bad weather in France has reached 4 million euros since the end of May

The bad weather that hit France between the end of May and the beginning of July caused “nearly a million claims” whose cost is estimated at 3.9 billion euros, announced France Assureurs in a press release on Tuesday.

“The year 2022 promises to be unprecedented: climate claims are already reaching an unprecedented cost over the past twenty years,” added the federation of insurers.

Damage all over the place

Damage to homes is expected to cost 1.07 billion euros, those to automobiles 1.08 billion, those to professional property 190 million and those to agricultural property 80 million.

The country experienced three episodes of severe weather, between May 20 and 23, between June 2 and 5 (355,000 claims for nearly 1.5 billion euros in total damage for these two periods), then between June 18 and July 4 (624,000 claims for 2.4 billion euros).

“These hailstorms are exceptional, both in terms of their intensity and their extent”, reminded France Assureurs, while global warming due to human activity makes this type of disaster more and more intense and more more frequent.
