Bundesliga: titles, tears, farewells – the 34th matchday in pictures

That’s it for the 2023/24 season. The tension in the fight against relegation remained high until the last minute. Who plays in which European Cup became a calculation task – and also depends on the finals of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen celebrates the championship undefeated

Bayer Leverkusen has been the new German champion since matchday 29. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team received the championship trophy on Saturday after beating FC Augsburg 2-1. But the really big party is yet to come – Bayer is playing for two more titles in the finals of the Europa League and the DFB Cup. VfB Stuttgart is runner-up after a 4-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach – ahead of FC Bayern, who lost 2-4 at TSG Hoffenheim and was overtaken.

Heart-stopping finale in the basement

In the heart-stopping finale in the afternoon, 1. FC Köln’s relegation was sealed by a 4-1 defeat at 1. FC Heidenheim. After the 1:4 defeat at Werder Bremen, VfL Bochum has to go into relegation and have to play against third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf in the second division to stay in the league. The bottom-placed Darmstadt 98, who have been relegated since matchday 31, said goodbye to the Bundesliga with a 4-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. 1. FC Union Berlin celebrated their rescue by winning 2-1 against SC Freiburg and FSV Mainz 05 by winning 3-1 at VfL Wolfsburg.

Eintracht Frankfurt is there internationally

The Champions League participants Leverkusen, Bayern, Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund were already determined before the match day. Eintracht Frankfurt secured sixth place with a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig. This means that at least the Europa League is safe for the Hessians.

If Dortmund wins the Champions League on June 1st, Eintracht will also play in the premier class next season. For Hoffenheim, seventh place means qualification for the playoffs of the Conference League. If Leverkusen wins the DFB Cup final against second division team 1. FC Kaiserslautern on May 25th, the seventh place team will advance to the Europa League. In this case, the eighth place in the table plays in the playoffs for the Conference League – and that is Heidemheim after the win against Cologne.
