This Friday, June 16, after a serious fall on stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, Gino failed to recover from his severe injuries. Our team is devastated by this tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones,” the team wrote in a statement posted on their site.
Gino Mader crashed at high speed during the final descent of stage 5 on Thursday. He was first able to be resuscitated on the spot by the medical staff who performed cardiac massage, before being airlifted to a hospital. But the young 26-year-old runner did not survive his injuries and his death was declared late Friday morning. “Today and every day we run for you, Gino,” his team concluded.
