The apple of the future – style

Gala, Elstar, Jonagold – the nation’s favorite varieties are not fit for climate change and could soon disappear from the market. But where is the apple that withstands heat, drought and late frosts? Visiting researchers who grow the fruit of the future.

The “Freiherr von Hallberg” has almost everything you would expect from an apple of the future: a brilliant white flesh, a nice, balanced acidity and an exceptional resistance to mildew. The only problem: Unfortunately, the variety shrivels up extremely quickly. So Michael Neumüller has to play bee again and keep crossing the Freiherr with other varieties. Three days ago he carefully harvested the pollen from the apple and stored it in the cold store at exactly 1.8 degrees. Now they are in a tube with the number Bay13645.
