Test drive with the Robo-Volkswagen – Economy

VW wants to benefit from autonomous driving at some point and is testing self-driving VW buses. 30 are already on the way to Munich, Hamburg and Austin in Texas. However, not everything went smoothly during the test drive.

The challenge is a rusty pickup truck, fitting for Texas. The pickup truck has a flat tire and the hazard lights are broken. He bumps along the narrow road at two kilometers per hour. And instead of flashing on both sides, only the left side flashes. One car after the other overtakes the pickup. Not the self-driving car. The autonomous Volkswagen cannot see the flat tire. He can’t see that the pickup driver is gesturing to please overtake. He can’t see that this pickup isn’t going to turn left, even though the turn signal suggests it is. So he obediently drives behind the pickup at two kilometers per hour.
