Alexander Zverev has to fend off several set points at the tennis tournament in Indian Wells, but is in the round of 16. Angelique Kerber is also convincing after her maternity leave.

Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber reached the round of 16 at the tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California.

Olympic champion Zverev won the Masters tournament against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 7:6 (9:7), 6:3. The former world number one Kerber continued her successful streak after her baby break and confidently defeated Veronika Kudermetowa from Russia 6:4, 7:5 in the third round.

The 36-year-old will face Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16. The Dane returned to the court last year after a three-year break to have a baby. Kerber has been active again since January of this year; in Indian Wells she won more than one match in a row for the first time since her break.

Zverev had to fend off five set points in the first set against Griekspoor, but won the tiebreak. The 26-year-old will next face Alex de Minaur from Australia.

Jan-Lennard Struff, however, was eliminated. The 33-year-old had no chance against the Australian Open winner and world number three Jannik Sinner and lost 3:6, 4:6.
