A study by the Bertelsmann Foundation is not usually a work that gets people too excited. Markus Weidling, however, was enthusiastic when he heard about the new energy transition report from the Gütersloh think tank last week. In it, experts from the Ecological-Social Market Economy Forum show that German tax law often enough does not promote the widely publicized phase-out of the country from the use of fossil fuels, but on the contrary actually hinders it. According to the authors, instead of vigorously promoting the energy transition, the applicable tax laws “in many cases create false incentives and inhibit innovations in the field of sustainable technologies”.
