“Taubenschlag” bar in Neuhausen: Come as a stranger, leave as a friend – Munich

If you turn off the lively Rotkreuzplatz into Schulstrasse, you have to be careful not to walk past the small bar that seems almost hidden in the wall of the house. Because the oversized, slightly tipsy-looking dove with a beer glass, whose picture is emblazoned on the window, is difficult to recognize in the gray of the night.

It’s a good thing that the mobile phone navigation stops the thirsty guests here and shows them the way into the small guest room of the “Taubenschlag” bar, which is bathed in a dim but warm light.

The beery pigeon is the trademark of the bar-pub Boazn.

Part of the room and the bar area to the right of the entrance are paneled with dark wood, the other walls are covered with brightly colored pictures of pigeons and lettering. Here and there are a few small square tables where you can make yourself comfortable.

Those who come to the “Taubenschlag” bar for the first time could be confused: too cozy for one of Munich’s many chic-micki bars, not run-down enough for a real Boazn, the two doddle machines next to the door are more suitable for a village pub. Apparently, the owners, two brothers, had a similar problem when they saw their shop, which opened in 2019, which is why it is noted above the front door that you can enter all three in one here. Bar, pub, Boazn – the guests are free to choose.

The bar owes its name to the owner’s wish that it should be like a dovecote. The bar is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6 p.m. There’s even a three-hour happy hour Tuesday through Thursday, where you can get any cocktail for eight euros.

The drinks menu is neatly sorted by type of alcohol. The drinks cost between nine and 12.50 euros. At this point, the Gin Basil Smash (10.50 euros) is particularly recommended, the cocktail that is a little different in every bar, but with which you can’t go wrong. There is also a selection of non-alcoholic cocktails and drinks, various wines, spritzes (6.90 euros) and shots (3 euros). There is beer from the Hofbräu, 4.20 euros each type from the bottle.

If you need a basis, you won’t find anything on the menu, but nobody minds if guests bring a pizza from the shop across the street, for example.

On this day, only bartender Sebastian is on duty, but there are other employees at the bar who keep their colleagues company in their free time. The bar isn’t just a place to work, it’s more of a place to meet friends. Of course, this also includes the guests. Almost everyone who walks in seems to be familiar with the staff. However, after a short time it becomes clear: you quickly belong to the bar family. So fast that after two hours it’s no longer embarrassing to sing the Maya the Bee intro together with the bar crew.

In addition to the happy hour, there are occasional events such as a Halloween party or a quiz night. If you like, you can also rent the bar for a private party. The audience, which often crowds together as if in a dovecote at a later hour, is a colorful mix. However, the most frequently represented are clearly the mid-20s to mid-30s, the “Gen X” as we would say these days.

On the other hand, the tiles in the 1950s-style women’s toilet with a baby blue and pink pattern are not quite “Gen X”. But at the end of the day, the fun evening, the good drinks, the nice conversations and the warm hugs before departure are more memorable than the tile patterns. You go home with the feeling that you have not only just left a good bar, but also a large group of friends. And so the first visit to the Taubenschlagbar will probably not have been the last for most people.
