SZ Podcast “On the Point” – News from January 17th, 2022 – Politics

The new Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is visiting Kiev and Moscow these days. There, the Greens want to defuse the Ukraine conflict diplomatically. It excludes arms deliveries for Ukraine, puts the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline up for sale and warns of “a price” that Russia would have to pay if the federation invaded the neighboring country.

Above all, she probably means new sanctions. “But from a Russian point of view, that’s not a big price to pay,” says Stefan Kornelius, head of the SZ political department. Russia under President Vladimir Putin probably only understands harshness. This dangerous situation was made possible by US President Joe Biden. Because he ruled out that the United States would intervene militarily. Washington must change this position. Because: “If you don’t want war, you have to prepare for war,” says Kornelius. This is a classic lesson from the Cold War.
