SZ podcast “On the Point” – News from 08/10/2021 – Economy

“All wheels stand still when your strong arm wants it”, it says in an old workers’ fight song that is just up to date again. Because the members of the train drivers’ union GDL show the strong arm. And the wheels are those of Deutsche Bahn. By Friday, only one in four long-distance trains will run and there will also be severe restrictions in regional traffic. Hundreds of thousands of commuters, vacationers and other travelers are affected. For GDL boss Claus Weselsky, however, there is no other way. He demands an increase in income of 3.2 percent and a corona allowance of 600 euros per month. For Deutsche Bahn, the strike is “completely inappropriate and excessive”.

In view of the break-ins caused by the Corona crisis, SZ business editor Alexander Hagelüken also considers the GDL’s demands to be inappropriate. The main aim of the GDL is to expand its own power. They take advantage of their powerful position in the infrastructure. Weselsky wanted the most spectacular possible conclusion on the taxpayers’ backs.

Further news: Off for free corona tests from October 11th, 30 billion euros for reconstruction funds after flood disaster.
