SZ podcast “On the Point” – News from 08/09/2021 – Knowledge

“The alarm bells are sounding deafening,” says UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in view of the IPCC’s new report. Accordingly, our earth is warming quickly and everywhere with increasing consequences. The report is the political basis for action at the World Climate Conference in Glasgow in November.

“The study is unique in its clarity and rigor, but was by no means unpredictable,” says Germany’s first Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer. Already in 1990 this was predicted almost literally. It is only those who can derive an advantage from it, says the former CDU politician. The energy producers, however, would still draw their profits from burning fossil fuels, and that had to be changed urgently. “We are approaching a world with ten billion people,” says Töpfer, “but our lifestyle is not capable of globalization.” Germany must be innovative in the technological development of alternative energy sources.

“We can still design, it is far from too late”, says the physicist Marlene Weiß, who heads the science department of the SZ. Although the goal of limiting global warming by only 1.5 degrees can hardly be achieved, it is still two degrees. As an individual you are lost, but all states now have to work together urgently and quickly. After all, you can see the drastic consequences if we didn’t do anything.

Other news: Up to 30 billion euros for flood victims, final report attack Berlin Christmas market.
