Suspended after a suspicious death, a department at Remiremont hospital reopened

The Remiremont hospital center (Vosges) has been in turmoil since 2022. Since then, complaints, now a dozen, have been filed after suspicious deaths within it. Particularly against the orthopedic surgery service, which had even been suspended for a month following a new suspicious death.

Once this deadline has passed, the service will be able to resume its activities. The Grand-Est Regional Health Agency (ARS) indicated that the “gradual resumption” of scheduled care would be authorized from Monday, following “work carried out” by the Hospital Center team “on the establishment of a better internal organization and procedures” for the care provided to patients in this department. “The conditions to guarantee patient safety are met,” she said in a press release. An “action plan”, requested by the ARS, was put in place by the establishment.

The management of the hospital center took the decision on October 4 to suspend the activity of the service, excluding emergencies, following a suspicious death that occurred the day before. A 78-year-old patient died in the department after having undergone femoral neck surgery. An investigation was opened by the Epinal public prosecutor’s office.

A dozen complaints target the hospital for suspicious deaths, particularly in this department. Following the first complaints from families of deceased patients, an investigation was carried out by the ARS, which reported, at the beginning of October, “poor keeping of medical records”, the absence of a visit in good conditions by the surgeon patients who have had surgery, problems with medical “staff” or even a lack of supervision of interns by a tutor.

A new inspection visit is planned for early 2024, according to the ARS.
