Study: Gulf Stream is heading towards tipping point – the consequences for Europe would be fatal – knowledge

An important ocean current for Europe, which also includes the Gulf Stream, is heading towards a tipping point, climate researchers led by René van Westen from the University of Utrecht write in the specialist journal Science Advances. If the tipping point is exceeded, the so-called Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could break off within a century and bring Europe an abrupt drop in temperature of a few degrees Celsius, in some places even by up to 20 degrees. “This is bad news for the climate system and humanity,” the authors write.
