Students attacked, discrimination… “Tension reigns” at the university during the elections

Tension seems to be at its height on the Nantes university campus, where events are taking place until this evening the elections aimed at appointing student representatives. This Thursday, the management of Nantes University reported the attack on two students, members of the Union Pirate and Solidaires Etudiant.es organizations, while they were this morning near the Tertre campus. “They were immediately taken care of by the Student Health Service and will be received tomorrow by the presidency of Nantes University,” responded the establishment. This attack would be linked to the tension reigning on campus between student organizations in the context of the elections. »

On Wednesday, one of these associations was in fact at the heart of another affair involving another list. A video posted online on social networks by the right-wing union Uni showed a verbal exchange in which a young man, presented as a member of the Pirate Union, declared “fuck the white race”.

The United immediately announced a complaint “for public incitement to discrimination based on origin” while the Pirate Union and six other organizations had denounced a “racist attack followed by a wave of cyber-harassment of students” from their competitors. In a press release, Solidaires accuses the United of increasing “racist provocations, Islamophobic invectives or sexist insults”.

Disciplinary measures to come

In short, a somewhat confusing situation that Nantes University intends to clarify. “An administrative investigation will be carried out as soon as possible in order to clarify the facts on all the actions which took place over the last three days in the context of the student elections,” continues the management. The necessary disciplinary measures will be taken and implemented with the greatest firmness. The establishment also reserves the possibility, at the end of the administrative investigation, to request the material and financial support allocated to the associations involved. »
