Jan-Lennard Struff’s journey at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid is not over yet. The German Davis Cup player, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser, defeated Aslan Karatsev 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4 and will play Carlos Alcaraz in the final on Sunday. In the afternoon, the Spanish defending champion beat Borna Coric from Croatia 6:4 and 6:3.

Struff started strong, quickly led 3-1, but then had to give up four games in a row. The first set went to the Russians, who was also able to defeat Struff in the second round of qualification. But as in the quarter-finals against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Struff then showed himself to be efficient and nerve-racking in the crucial moments. The Warsteiner served well when Karatsev had a chance to break, and as a setback he became particularly aggressive in the special moments.

After 2:05 hours of play, a backhand from Karatsev ended up out of bounds. And brought Struff the first match ball. The 33-year-old failed to take advantage of this opportunity, just like his second, third and fourth a few moments later. Karatsev came up again, Struff had to serve himself. And he did it 15 times.

With a win against Carlos Alcaraz, Struff could become the second German after Alexander Zverev to win the title in the Caja Magica. Zverev won the tournament in 2018 and 2021.
