Victorious in the downhill in Bormio at the end of December, second behind boss Marco Odermatt on Thursday, the French skier enjoyed another prestigious success this Friday on the Super-G in Wengen. Starting with bib 3, Sarrazin completed a breathtakingly daring round to the point of brushing against the nets, knocking out the race before his rivals set off. “Ohlala the Frenchman… My God, what have you done Cyprien? », exclaimed the commentator from Wengen, temporarily abandoning the Swiss-German in the heat of the action.
Beaten by Odermatt by 58 hundredths the day before, the 29-year-old Frenchman took his revenge on the Swiss with exactly the same gap on the line between the two men. “The beauty is tomorrow,” joked Sarrazin after the race, in reference to the second descent which will be run on Saturday on the full 4.5 km course, the longest on the world circuit.
“Having a hard time really celebrating”
Like Thursday, the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, world number 2 for the last two seasons, completes the podium at one second. By climbing four places to settle in third place in the provisional super-G rankings, after having become world number 2 in downhill on Thursday, Sarrazin confirms his place among the favorites in speed, alongside Odermatt and Kilde, who comes from the giant and is only competing in his second season as a downhiller. “It’s cool to be part of this trio, I accept. I have to learn this new status, but it’s really good,” he said happily.
Happy, the Frenchman nevertheless had a thought for the unfortunate Alexis Pinturault, taken to hospital a little earlier after a nasty fall. “This victory is for Alexis, his family,” he assured.
