Ana Roš’s story actually sounds too unbelievable to be true: The Slovenian has managed to become a star of top gastronomy as an autodidact – and that with a restaurant in a remote community in the Slovenian Soča Valley.

The former professional athlete actually wanted to pursue a career as a diplomat after an accident. But then she met her current husband after completing her studies. For him, Roš threw her plans overboard and quickly took over his parents ’restaurant with him: Hiša Franko. Without ever having been in the kitchen for a long time, she painstakingly taught herself the art of cooking. In 2017 she was named the best cook in the world by the renowned “Restaurant Magazine”, followed by two Michelin stars in 2020 – which were also awarded in Slovenia for the first time, not least because of her outstanding work.

Ana Roš talks to Simone Menne about her unusual leadership style

“Those are not my stars. The stars belong to the entire Hiša Franko team,” says Roš im star-Podcast “The Boss”. When she talks about her employees, it becomes clear that the 48-year-old is going her own way in the industry known for its rough tone. “Sometimes my role is almost a maternal one. I talk to my team about their successes and failures. I’m there to support them,” she says of her leadership style. She talks to host Simone Menne about her unusual career and gives tips on how to deal with defeat.

“All successful people have doubts in between. And they made it at some point. You have to think about them when things get difficult,” says the top chef. The mother of two also reveals what happened when a restaurant critic once wrote a slap after he had not met Roš in person in the restaurant because she was at her son’s sporting event.
