A violent storm caused hundreds of emergency operations in northern Germany yesterday and cost a woman her life. The weather is supposed to calm down now.

Today in Germany after the passage of Storm low “Poly” expected calmer weather again. The German Weather Service (DWD) announced that there could still be showers and individual thunderstorms south of the Danube and in the north with many clouds. Otherwise it will be cloudy, sometimes with longer sunny periods.

The meteorologists had already given the all-clear on Wednesday evening, and “Poly” then moved on to southern Sweden and Denmark during the night. Storm and hurricane gusts had previously swept across northern Germany. The coastal areas and the mainland of Lower Saxony and Bremen were affected.

In Rhede an der Ems, Lower Saxony, an uprooted tree buried a pedestrian under it yesterday. The woman was trapped and died at the scene of the accident. In other places in Lower Saxony, trees fell on tracks, as a spokeswoman for the railway said. The police and fire brigade went to hundreds of operations in the affected regions, but mostly it was not about major emergencies.

In the evening, a spokesman for the Hamburg police reported: “Thank God there were no serious incidents in which anyone was seriously injured.” The provisional balance in Schleswig-Holstein was similar: “It has been relatively quiet so far – in contrast to what we expected,” said a police spokeswoman in Flensburg.
