Since Sebastian Fitzek published his debut “The Therapy” in 2006, all of his books (not just the thrillers, which often have short chapters and cliffhangers and are sometimes masterfully crafted) have been bestsellers. Eight of them reached number one, and in some years two of his books even made it there. No author has been more successful in Germany since 2013. Few are panned so fervently by critics. Denis Scheck, for example, described “The Joshua Profile” as the “zero line of contemporary German literature” and “The Inmate” as a “cesspool”.
