Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is ready to talk to DFB director Oliver Bierhoff about equal pay for women and men in national football teams.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is ready to talk to DFB director Oliver Bierhoff about equal pay for women and men in national football teams.

“Of course he will also be happy to talk to Mr. Bierhoff about it,” said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin.

Scholz had called for equal pay for women and men in sport on Twitter – especially in national teams. Bierhoff then suggested a conversation with the SPD politician. “I’d like to invite him over. Then I’ll explain the numbers to him a little better,” he said on ARD.

Hebestreit also pointed out that Scholz followed the first two games of the women’s national team at the European Championship. “He will continue to do so.” Germany had won the two games against Denmark and Spain and thus qualified early for the quarter-finals.

The German Football Association is trying to ensure that women are paid more appropriately and has offered a record bonus for the European Championship: 60,000 euros will go to the players if they win the title in England.
