Weather topic: Partly strong thunderstorms and heavy rain

As of: May 17, 2024 1:00 p.m

While calm and sunny weather continues to prevail in the northeastern parts of the country, it is raining heavily in some places in the rest of the country. We look at the weather conditions and the amount of rain.

A very stable high over Scandinavia together with dry and warm continental air ensures sunshine in the northeast. Otherwise, a low pressure zone has expanded over Germany from the southwest, the center of which is near the Bay of Biscay. On its front, more southerly winds allowed moister air from the Mediterranean to seep into parts of the southwest half. In the humid air, strong thunderstorms formed in places over the course of the day on Thursday, particularly from Württemberg and Swabia via Franconia and Thuringia via northern Hesse to North Rhine-Westphalia.

Towards the evening and on Friday night, a small depression also developed in the south of Germany, which then brought heavy rain to areas of Baden-Württemberg, the Palatinate and Saaraland. Our figure shows some rain totals from Thursday and Friday night. In Schwäbisch-Gmünd, Württemberg, a total of 80 l/m² (liters per square meter) fell, followed by Mummelsee in the northern Black Forest with 74 l/m² and 50 l/m² in Schweix, Palatinate. The further you look to the northeast, the rarer the heavy precipitation events become. In Behringen in Thuringia there was 38 l/m², in Bad Sassendorf in North Rhine-Westphalia it was 29 l/m².
