Status: 04.09.2021 11:20 a.m.

Today at 3:25 p.m. Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) and sailing star Boris Herrmann want to open the 127th Kiel Week. Katja Matthes, Director at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research, is also present at the ceremony.

In addition to the sailing competitions off Kiel-Schilksee, more than 100 program items are planned. The organizers do not have large stages, markets and promenade in the city. However, there are various events. On the Krusenkoppel, for example, there are always children’s concerts between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. during the ten days. The line of play on the Krusenkoppel, however, is canceled. In the evening it gets “extremely quiet” on the open-air stage at various concerts for adults. According to the city, these music events are already fully booked.

District festivals, cultural picnics and sailing cinema

Not only the naval base in Kiel will be full of ships again during Kiel Week.

In addition, there will be local festivals, sporting events and award ceremonies from Saturday. For example, the Navy will open the gates of the Kiel-Wik naval base for an open ship on Saturday, September 4th, from 1pm to 5pm. There will be a cultural picnic on both days around the Flanders bunker on the first weekend. Visitors must register in advance. As in 2020, there will also be the sailing cinema at the coastal power plant.

Awards ceremonies and trips to the town hall tower

Renowned prizes such as the Kiel Science Prize and the Innovation Prize are also awarded during the Kiel Week. If you want, you can also take a trip up the Kiel town hall tower. It goes up 67 meters. Further items on the program: The hospitals are visited by clinic clowns, the old people’s and nursing homes by music trains and orchestras.

The “Alexander von Humboldt II” will lead the windjammer parade.

As in the previous year, the focus is on sailing. Kiel’s Mayor Ulf Kämper (SPD) said in advance: “2,000 sailors will be there. The sailing scene can look forward to exciting regattas.” As always, the competitions will be held in Schilksee. On September 11th, 120 ships will take part in the traditional windjammer parade on the fjord. The parade on September 11th will be led by the barque “Alexander von Humboldt II”.
