S-Bahn: Greens call for a freeze on construction on the second main route – district of Munich

The district chairman of the Greens in the district of Munich, Volker Leib, calls for an immediate halt to construction on the second main line of the S-Bahn in the state capital and criticizes the eight district administrators of the districts within the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). Last week, in a fire letter to Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), they demanded that construction of the second tunnel be continued despite delays and massive cost increases.

The letter from the district administrators, in which timely improvements to the Munich S-Bahn are called for, is a “bluff”, according to Oberhachinger Leib. Instead of advocating a functioning S-Bahn, the eight district administrators – including Munich’s district administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU) – would support the prime minister a year before the state elections in Bavaria. Leib demands that the costs of canceling the project on the second trunk line must be determined by an independent body, “not by those who want to whitewash the project and cling to the disaster.” The Free State of Bavaria is responsible for the construction of the second trunk line.

According to Leib, a ring road over the south and north ring, which is linked to the subway, makes structural sense, but sticking to the second tunnel blocks local transport in the entire region. It was only recently announced that the second tunnel would be completed almost ten years later, in 2037, and would cost 7.2 instead of 3.8 billion euros.
