Russian anti-aircraft defense damaged in Crimea?

The Russian and Ukrainian militaries accuse each other of further drone attacks. The target was, among other things, the Crimean peninsula, where Ukraine said it destroyed an expensive Russian anti-aircraft system.

Ukraine claims to have destroyed a Russian anti-aircraft system on the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia. This is reported by the Reuters news agency, citing Ukrainian intelligence circles.

The Ukrainian newspaper “Ukrainskaya Pravda” is even more specific: It was a modern anti-aircraft system of the type “S-400 Triumf”. The newspaper also cited unnamed sources from the Ukrainian secret service for this information. The Russian side has not yet confirmed any damage in Crimea, nor has there been any information about possibly injured residents. The Russian military only announced the downing of eleven drones over the Black Sea peninsula.

According to the dpa news agency, the drone attacks by Ukraine triggered serious explosions near the large city of Yevpatoria in western Crimea. Video footage circulated on the Internet, said to have come from residents, shows a tall column of fire rising into the night sky. Yevpatoria is considered a health resort. Natalia Humenyuk, press spokeswoman for the Army Southern Office in the Ukrainian army, emphasized that there were also several military objects nearby that were targeted by the drone attacks.

Neither the statements from Ukraine nor those from Russia can be independently verified.

Conflict parties as a source

In the current situation, information on the course of the war, shelling and casualties provided by official bodies of the Russian and Ukrainian parties to the conflict cannot be directly verified by an independent body.

Russian patrol ship attacked

In addition to the attacks on Crimea, Ukraine is also said to have attacked the patrol ship “Sergei Kotov”, which belongs to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, with five naval drones. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced this via the Telegram messaging service. All drones could therefore have been destroyed. According to the ministry, the “Sergei Kotov” has been the target of Ukrainian attacks for the third time.

There are also said to have been attacks in the Russian border regions of Bryansk and Belgorod. Five drones were shot down over Bryansk and one over Belgorod, Russian news agencies reported, citing local officials and the Defense Ministry in Moscow. Both areas border Ukraine. Here, too, there is no official information about possible damage or victims.

Ukraine also accuses Russia of attacking areas in the north, south and center of the country during the night. A total of 22 drones were detected, all of which were said to be Iranian “Shahed” drones, as the Ukrainian Air Force announced on the Telegram news service. 17 of the drones could have been intercepted.

Damage after attack on Sevastopol remains unclear

Just on Wednesday, Ukraine attacked a shipyard in the port of Sevastopol in Crimea with cruise missiles. However, there are contradictory statements from both sides about the damage.

According to Russian information, two ships were damaged and 24 people were injured. Ukraine also reported that two ships were hit in the attack: a Russian landing ship and a submarine. But while the Ukrainian military spoke of “significant” damage, the Russian Defense Ministry said both ships could be fully repaired and then returned to service.
