The foreign ministers from Ukraine and Russia have arrived in Turkey for joint talks. Fighting is apparently continuing, but escape corridors are being reopened. The news at a glance.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov has arrived in Turkey for talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Kuleba. Before the summit, Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu met separately with Lavrov and Kuleba. The foreign ministers of Ukraine, Russia and Turkey then want to discuss options for ending the war in Ukraine. It is the first government-level meeting since Russia’s war against the neighboring country began two weeks ago. According to Turkish information, there should be separate statements afterwards.
However, a breakthrough and a quick end to the war in Ukraine are not expected. Russia is demanding that Ukraine declare itself neutral in its constitution and that the annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea be recognized as Russian and the separatist areas as independent. So far, Ukraine has largely rejected this, but President Selenskyj has indicated a certain willingness to compromise.
In the evening, Chancellor Scholz (SPD) and the other EU heads of state and government will meet at a summit in Versailles near Paris to discuss the current situation. Federal Minister of the Interior Faeser (SPD) is traveling to Poland for talks about refugees. So far, more than 80,000 war refugees have been registered in Germany. According to Polish information, around 1.4 million people from Ukraine have crossed the border into Poland since the beginning of the war.
Escape corridors are to be opened – fighting continues
According to Ukrainian sources, another escape corridor was opened in the city of Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine in the morning – after the ceasefire agreed between the two sides. People are to be brought to safety in the city of Poltava further west. In the port city of Mariupol and other cities surrounded by the Russians, evacuation corridors are also to be opened today, Ukrainian politician Vereshchuk announced. In the past two days, almost 50,000 people had apparently come out of Sumy and the surrounding area, and about 10,000 from towns and villages around Kyiv.
The events of the war last night remained confusing, especially since the information provided by the opponents of the war cannot be independently verified. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian planes bombed the area around Sumy, including residential areas and a gas pipeline. The Ukrainian army spoke of attempted Russian raids on the capital Kyiv, where air raid alarms are said to have been triggered, and the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv, as well as attacks on the region around the city of Kharkiv in the east. The pro-Russian separatists in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic reported shelling from the Ukrainian side.
