Russia: 13 dead after school shooting in Izhevsk

At least 13 people are killed in Izhevsk in the west of the country, including seven children – the authorities say. The perpetrator takes his own life, the background is unclear.

Several people were killed and injured when gunshots were fired in a Russian school in the city of Izhevsk on Monday. The national investigative committee spoke of 13 dead, seven children and six adults, including two teachers and two security guards. The investigating authority also confirmed that there were 21 injured. The Interior Ministry of the Udmurt Republic had initially spoken of six dead and 20 injured.

“Today in Udmurtia there was a tragedy in Izhevsk at school 88. An unidentified person broke into the school and killed a guard, that’s already known,” said Governor Alexander Brechalov. “There are child victims and injured.” Udmurtia is a republic in western Russia, with Izhevsk as its capital.

The perpetrator killed himself, as confirmed by the Interior Ministry. There is no information about the background of the fact so far. Chief investigator Alexander Bastrykin only said about the perpetrator: “He was wearing a black T-shirt with Nazi symbols and a balaclava. He had no documents with him. His identity is currently being clarified.”

In Russia there have already been multiple rampages at educational institutions with many dead and injured, for example in May 2021 at a high school in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, which borders on Udmurtia.
