Lewandowski is one of the best strikers in the world. When he made his first appearance for Poland 13 years ago, he was referred to as a defender.

Robert Lewandowski has been involved in professional football since 2006. In the meantime, he has 640 competitive games under his belt, scoring an unbelievable 472 goals and preparing 129. Those numbers mark him as one of the best strikers in history.

The 33-year-old is therefore quite rightly on the list of candidates to win the Ballon d’Or and many observers in football see hardly any serious competitor for Lewandowski. He has not yet won this title, but one year after being named FIFA World Player of the Year 2020 and the 41-goal record season for FC Bayern in the Bundesliga, the award would be logical.

Lewandowski has also set records in the Polish national team. 126 missions and 72 hits are unmatched, meanwhile he leads the team as captain on the field. On September 10th, 2008 it was completely different. On this day Lewandowski made his debut as a player from Lech Posen for his country.

In a World Cup qualifier at Underdog San Marino Lewandowski was substituted on by national coach Leo Beenhakker in the 59th minute. Zehner Marek Saganowski left the field for him – and then the broadcasting television station made a mishap that seems particularly amusing today.

When he was shown on TV after he was substituted on, Lewandowski was referred to as “Defender”. One could actually have seen quite quickly that this does not quite fit together. But no later than eight minutes later, because Lewandowski contributed the goal to the 2-0 final score. As a striker, of course.
