VW still needs until 2026 to build an electric car for less than 25,000 euros, and Chinese suppliers do not yet offer anything like this in Europe. How do Renault and Citroën manage this?
Pierre Leclercq answers the question of whether you really make money with this car with a telling counter question: “Can you imagine that Carlos Tavares would allow a car to be built that doesn’t make any money?” However, there is a good reason why such a question even has to be asked at Citroën’s design and development center, about an hour outside of Paris: so far, German car manufacturers in particular have found themselves unable to build an electric car for less than 25,000 euros. Leclercq is head of design for the Citroën brand, which belongs to the Stellantis Group. He and his team were selected by CEO Carlos Tavares to devise an electric car that was “affordable, but not cheap,” as the designer puts it.
