Reinsurers – Swiss Re surprises with good figures – Economy

The reinsurer Swiss Re surprisingly achieved a billion profit in the first three quarters despite high catastrophe claims. The surplus was 1.26 billion US dollars after a loss of 691 million a year earlier, as the Swiss rival Munich Re announced on Friday. The company thus fared significantly better than most analysts expected. The destruction caused by natural disasters such as hurricane “Ida” in the USA and low “Bernd” in Europe cost the company a total of around two billion dollars. Nevertheless, Swiss Re was in the black in property and casualty business and in direct business with industrial customers. However, the many corona deaths, especially in the USA, dragged the life and health sector into the red: Here the corona-related damage totaled around 1.2 billion dollars.
