Israel has reacted to new riots on the border with the Gaza Strip: The air force launched attacks on facilities of the radical Islamic Hamas in the coastal strip. So far there have been no reports of victims.

After new confrontations on the border with the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Air Force fired again at Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip. The army announced that the targets were a military facility for the manufacture of weapons and the entrance to a tunnel in the north of the Palestinian Territory.

With the attacks, the military reacted to the violent riots on Saturday and to the fact that Palestinians had sent off balloons with incendiary devices in the direction of southern Israel. Both the riots and the arson attacks are “examples of how Hamas continues to use terrorist tactics and target civilians,” the Israeli army said in a statement. So far there is no information on possible victims from the Israeli air strikes.

According to paramedics, eleven Palestinians were injured in the clashes on Saturday. In addition, a twelve-year-old Palestinian was shot dead in confrontations over the weekend.

Palestinians are calling for the blockade to be relaxed

The aim of the Palestinian protests is to put pressure on Israel to further ease the blockade on Gaza. In the past few days, restrictions had already been reduced and the import of goods and equipment for reconstruction in the coastal strip had been approved.

In May, Israel and Palestinian militants had an eleven-day armed conflict in which 13 people were killed in Israel, according to official figures, and 255 people died in the Gaza Strip, according to the Ministry of Health. The EU, Israel and the USA classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Israel tightened a blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2007, which is now supported by Egypt. Both countries justify the measure with security interests. Around two million people live in the coastal area, most of them under very poor conditions, according to aid organizations.
