It’s been a little over two years since Peter Schöttel traveled to England to hire half a coach. The sports director of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) had received the telephone number for initial contact from the then Salzburg manager Christoph Freund, and now he negotiated directly on the spot with someone who had not been on anyone’s list: Ralf Rangnick, who was still at the time Manchester United coach in office, became national coach of the Austrians a few weeks later. Schöttel became an acclaimed coach buyer – and his friend, now the sporting director of FC Bayern, knew that it wouldn’t hurt Salzburg as a location if you made the right contact.
