The man had previously been arrested. The police and public prosecutor’s office said there were “evidences of mental illness” in the man. There is already “police intelligence from the area of ​​state security and hate crime” against him.

The investigation into the suspect’s motive was still ongoing. The man’s apartment was therefore searched.

“Increasing fair game culture”

The man is said to have attacked the SPD politician Giffey from behind with a bag with hard contents on Tuesday afternoon in a library in the Rudow district. The former Governing Mayor of Berlin and former Federal Minister for Family Affairs was hit in the head and neck and went to a hospital for outpatient treatment of the headache and neck pain.

The morning after the attack, Giffey commented on the incident. She is doing well, but she is still worried and shocked by “the increasing fair game culture with which people who are politically active and committed in our country are increasingly exposed to supposedly justified and tolerable attacks,” she wrote on Instagram.
