Several people who were temporarily arrested by police in Berlin on Sunday morning are now at large. The wanted ex-RAF members Garweg and Staub were not among them.
However, “it was very likely that Burkhard Garweg’s alleged accommodation could be identified,” said a spokesman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) on Sunday. Accordingly, during the search of the left-wing alternative trailer site on Markgrafendamm early on Sunday morning, a caravan was confiscated and transported away for further investigations. A total of ten people were briefly detained during the operation in Berlin-Friedrichshain in order to determine their identity. However, the two ex-RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg were not there. The search for Daniela Klette’s suspected accomplices continues.
LKA, BKA, SEK, police: large-scale operation with 130 forces
According to an LKA spokeswoman, the joint operation by the LKA, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Berlin police began at around 7:30 a.m. Special forces were also deployed on the company premises. Initially it was said that the sounds of gunfire could also be heard. However, as the LKA confirmed to NDR Lower Saxony, these were noises when a door was opened. According to a spokesman for the Berlin police, a total of 130 forces were deployed.
Search for Garweg with current photos
The investigative authorities met on Saturday, a few days after the arrest Ex-RAF terrorist Daniela Klette addressed the population with current photos: The pictures “very likely showed Burkhard Garweg,” it is said. An LKA spokesman told NDR Lower Saxony on Saturday that nothing could be said about the origin of the recordings for tactical reasons.
Prosecutor: Garweg “lived under a legend”
According to the LKA, the photos were taken between 2021 and 2024. Overall seven current recordings have been published. Dogs can also be seen on it. Whether these are Burkhard Garweg’s dogs is still the subject of investigations. The photos clearly demonstrate “that the accused Garweg obviously lived under a legend,” said senior public prosecutor Koray Freudenberg. According to current findings, it can be assumed, according to the LKA, that the 55-year-old and the suspected ex-terrorist Daniela Klette had personal and direct contact with each other. Since the fleeing suspected criminals could be armed, the LKA Lower Saxony strongly advises against approaching the wanted people yourself. Instead, the investigators are asking for information on the whereabouts of Garweg or Staub using the phone number (0511) 98 73-74 00.
