Quiz candidate confuses Homer Simpson with a poet

Somehow right, but also completely wrong: Quiz candidate confuses Homer Simpson with a poet

The candidate noticed his mistake too late

On a British quiz show, a candidate was asked about Homer’s work. And immediately thought of Homer Simpson from Springfield – much to the amusement of the presenter and audience.

As a candidate: you can lose your nerve in a quiz show – when it comes to a large amount of money and an audience of millions is watching. A blackout is forgivable, but it gets bitter if you give the right answer but have misunderstood the question.

That happened to a candidate on the British broadcaster ITV’s “Tipping Point” quiz show. In the program, four candidates compete against each other and have to answer questions of knowledge. For example this: “In his epic poems, Homer often refers to nectar as the drink of the gods and what other substance as their food?” The candidate’s answer came out like a shot: “I know he likes donuts.”

Homer Simpson likes donuts – but is not a poet

That is – well – not entirely wrong, but also not right. Because the quiz candidate had obviously confused two famous Homers: It was about the ancient poet Homer, from whom the verse epic “Iliad” and the “Odyssey” originate. The participant, however, had apparently overheard the reference to the “epic poems” and was thinking of Homer Simpson from the television series “The Simpsons” – and he really likes donuts for his life.

The moderator found it visibly difficult to keep his facial features under control with this answer. But he still had to wait and see how the other candidates answered before he could clear up the error. But the teammate didn’t smell the roast either: “I would have said donuts too. Beer and donuts,” she said.

Günther Jauch moderates the popular quiz show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" since 1999.

When the moderator read the question out again, even the previously self-confident candidate swore: “I have the wrong Homer.” Much to the amusement of moderator Ben Shephard – and many users on the Internet. The video spread on Twitter with the wrong answer. Most of them quickly realized that it wasn’t about Homer Simpson. But hardly anyone knew the answer they were looking for: ambrosia, an immortal food of the gods.
