In contrast to last year, the Danish royal family will spend Christmas together. After the title dispute, unity is demonstrated.

This year, Danish Queen Margrethe II (83) will once again spend the festival of love together with her two sons Joachim (54) and Frederik (55) and their families. The royal family celebrated in 2022 Separated at Christmas – after the Queen stripped Prince Joachim’s children of their royal titles.

Christmas Eve at Marselisborg Castle near Aarhus

Now peace seems to be returning to the Danish royal family after the title dispute. As the Daily Mail reportedthe royals will demonstrate unity this time around the holidays. The Danish palace confirmed, that the Queen will spend Christmas with her sons at Marselisborg Castle, south of Aarhus. The statement said: “Her Majesty the Queen will be a guest at the castle from December 20th and on Christmas Eve the Queen will celebrate with the Crown Prince Family and His Royal Highness Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and their two children.” Prince Joachim’s son Count Felix (21) from his first marriage will join his family on December 25th. Only one thing will be missing: the eldest son, Count Nikolai (24), will spend Christmas abroad. He is currently studying at the University of Technology in Sydney.

Since January, Joachim’s children are no longer princes and princesses

Apparently the tensions that existed between the queen and her sons the previous year have largely been eliminated. The palace announced in September 2022 that Joachim’s four children would be stripped of their prince and princess titles from January 2023. Margrethe’s youngest son openly criticized this step. A press release published by the Danish royal family said: “With her decision, Her Majesty the Queen would like to create a framework in which the four grandchildren can shape their lives to a much greater extent on their own, without the special considerations and obligations to be restricted, which entails a formal affiliation with the royal family as an institution. All four grandchildren retain their place in the line of succession.”

Last year, the royal family then spent Christmas apart: Prince Joachim traveled to Vietnam with his family, according to the Danish magazine “Her & Nu”, and heir to the throne Frederik with his loved ones in the Australian homeland of his wife Mary (51).
