Property tax: What the decision means – Munich district

While many property owners have not yet submitted the required property tax return, others have already received the notice. However, how much they have to pay from 2025 onwards depends on the assessment rates of the individual municipalities, which will still be adjusted. One thing is clear: owners of large properties in particular must expect additional costs.

The notice from the tax office comes from Höchstädt on the Danube and is called the main finding. It lists figures for living space and usable space, equivalent figures and equivalent amounts, square meters and euro amounts. And it leaves the recipient pretty clueless. Because how much a property owner has to pay in property tax in the future is not clear from the letter. It can’t even be, since this amount depends on the city or municipality’s assessment rate, with which the equivalence number ultimately has to be multiplied. And since the new property tax is not to apply until 2025, the municipalities can still increase it until then. It is considered unlikely that they will lower it.
