When attempting to install an update for Bitlocker, Windows’ file system encryption, in the Windows recovery environment, an error often occurs, which results in the installation attempt being aborted with the uninformative error message “0x80070643”. The error has existed since January. Since then, Microsoft has simply not been able to get it under control.

In the Windows Release Health notes The company has now announced that it is throwing in the towel: “An automatic solution to this problem will not be available with future Windows updates,” it writes there. The developers add: “Manual steps are necessary for the update installation to fully work on devices affected by this error.”

The only thing left for those affected is to try the workarounds known so far. In January, Microsoft suggested enlarging the recovery partition for the affected operating systems Windows 11 21H2, Windows 10 22H2 and 21H2 as well as Windows Server 2022 – at least 250 MB of free space is required. Readers reported that after several attempts it finally worked. Others managed to reinstall Windows 10 using the installer. Microsoft has also published Powershell scripts to help with this.

The c’t has compiled detailed information and explained how those affected can help themselves.
