Coach Jürgen Klopp described Liverpool’s victory in the city derby against Everton as a “great relief”. The recently ailing Reds had prevailed 2-0 on Monday evening.

The 19-time English football champion is now ninth in the Premier League. The gap to a Champions League rank is still nine points with less games played.

Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah and recently signed Dutchman Cody Gakpo scored their first goal for Liverpool FC’s first league win of the new year. “It felt like us, it looked like us,” Klopp said afterwards. “The overall performance was extremely important for us because we had to make a statement,” added the 55-year-old and spoke of the best game for a long time: “Everyone starts to believe in themselves a little more tonight.”

Both goals against the city rivals threatened with relegation came after counterattacks. Before the first goal, however, the home side were lucky that Everton’s James Tarkowski only headed to the post. Klopp also had Virgil van Dijk, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota available for the game for the first time after injuries. Diogo Jota and Firmino came on in the second half.
