Post discussion: Green anger over Habeck and Baerbock

As of: 09/28/2021 3:34 p.m.

The Green bosses Baerbock and Habeck are said to have already agreed on government posts. This causes anger for many in the party. A clear warning comes from the former Environment Minister Trittin.

The possible premature determination of government posts with the Greens is causing anger in the left wing of the party. The former Green Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin told the “Spiegel” with a view to party leaders Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck: “That will be decided by the party and not just two people in personal talks.”

His party is negotiating “a government that will put Germany on the 1.5-degree path”. And further: “Then it is decided who gets which post.”

The former Green parliamentary group leader and Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin criticized the simulation games for the allocation of posts in his party.

First “implement core demands in government”

Criticism also comes from the Green Youth. Federal spokesman Georg Kurz called it “absolutely off the mark, now to discuss who at the end of the process could eventually take over which government offices”. About the vice-chancellorship “it’s not at all. We don’t understand what that is about,” he told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”.

Kurz emphasized that the Greens had “the best result we have ever had” with Baerbock. Before the question of office, there is first of all “the crystal clear mandate to implement our core demands in the next government”.

Habeck set as Vice Chancellor?

The “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” had previously reported that, according to an internal agreement, Habeck should take over the post of Vice Chancellor in a possible government. However, the Greens did not only agree on this on election night. You had agreed a long time ago that you would like to reorganize your personnel after a bad election result. Habeck had given Baerbock precedence for the candidacy for chancellor in the spring.

Baerbock and Habeck said on Monday that they had clarified personnel issues among themselves. However, they did not give any details. In parts of the party it was said even before the election that Habeck would probably get the first access to a ministry and could also become vice-chancellor.

The editorial network Germany reported on a meeting of the left wing of the Green parliamentary group. According to one participant, many were “very angry” about Habeck’s move. It should not be allowed that Baerbock “now get the boo-woman role”.

Habeck’s attempt to capture speculation

Meanwhile, Habeck reacted. He used a press conference held by the Bundestag faction in Berlin today to curb personnel speculation. “The question of who will be Vice-Chancellor is completely irrelevant. We don’t even have a Chancellor.” The party stands behind the federal executive committee and behind Baerbock as a person. He and Baerbock would conduct and prepare the exploratory talks that are now pending with great unity and strength.

The co-leader of the Green parliamentary group, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, said that personnel decisions for the government would be made in the end. The federal executive board will soon decide on an exploratory team, which will then support Habeck and Baerbock.
