Possible job cuts at Thyssenkrupp: steel division to shrink – economy

Europe’s largest steelworks is underutilized. Management is now reacting and the plans will soon be presented. This is supposed to make the subsidiary more attractive to buyers, but the union is alarmed.

The two-page leaflet from IG Metall appears dramatic. It shows a deforested forest and an ax held by an arm in a smart suit shirt. “We will not take part in mindless clear-cutting,” it says below. However, the union is not warning of clear-cutting in the forest, but at Thyssenkrupp’s steel subsidiary. IG Metall also distributed the call there on Friday. The employee representatives fear that management could close blast furnaces or rolling mills in Europe’s largest steelworks in the north of Duisburg.
