Sony plans to officially launch its portable console, PlayStation Portal, later this year, with a target price of $199.99. The handheld device is said to be able to stream PS5 games over a Wi-Fi connection and features an eight-inch LCD screen that the manufacturer says runs at a resolution of 1080p at 60fps.
Although the handheld is designed to stream games over any Wi-Fi connection, it will not work with Sony’s upcoming cloud streaming for PS5 games, which the company has confirmed. Games streamed on PlayStation 5 with a PS Plus Premium membership are therefore not compatible with PlayStation Portal. So this only offers a way to stream games that are already on the PlayStation 5 to the handheld and play them from there. A connection with a speed of at least 5 Mbit/s is said to be necessary, but Sony recommends 15 Mbit/s for the best experience.
The PlayStation Portal has distinctive controllers on each side of the display that look similar to Sony’s DualSense controllers. According to Sony, they support adaptive triggers and haptic feedback so that PS5 games should feel similar to playing them with a real DualSense controller. The new handheld console should also be able to play different media.
However, the PlayStation Portal will not have Bluetooth, so it will not be able to connect to wireless headphones. Instead, it uses PlayStation Link wireless technology, a new, proprietary standard for PlayStation devices. PlayStation Link was developed to enable low-latency, lossless audio transmission. In addition, Sony will launch a wireless headset and headphones that will be compatible with PlayStation Link.
