Former SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel has a new job: At Thyssenkrupp Steel he wants to help shape the “green transformation” on the supervisory board.

The former SPD chairman and former Federal Minister of Economics Sigmar Gabriel takes over the chairmanship of the supervisory board at Thyssenkrupp’s steel division.

The social democrat was appointed to the control committee by the general meeting of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG on Thursday and was elected the new chairman of the committee at the inaugural meeting of the supervisory board, the group announced on Thursday.

Thyssenkrupp CEO Martina Merz emphasized that Gabriel brings valuable experience with him from his time as Federal Environment and Economics Minister, which will be “essential for the “green transformation” of Thyssenkrupp Steel”. He will set clear accents for the further development of the steel sector.

The steel industry is striving to switch to climate-neutral production. This multi-billion dollar “green transformation” is about the change from conventional to hydrogen-based steel production.

Gabriel himself emphasized that the requirements of the “green transformation” presented Thyssenkrupp Steel, but also the entire industry, with a historic challenge: “Supporting this path is one of the most exciting tasks that can currently be assigned in German industry.” It is about bringing together economic success and sustainability in climate policy in Germany. He wants to contribute to this in his new role.
