The decision to award this year’s Peace Prize of the German Book Trade to Salman Rushdie is as obvious as it is sensational. Obvious because Rushdie happens to be the most famous living writer and sensational because he has unwittingly become a symbol of universal values, of freedom of speech and freedom per se.
