“Part of my life was taken from me”… Serge, seriously injured, testifies for the first time

“He continues to recover skills every day, at the cost of significant rehabilitation efforts. » One year to the day after the serious head injury of Toulouse activist Serge Duteuil-Graziani on the scene of the Sainte-Soline clashes, his comrades in the struggle give his news. To do this, as usual, they use the blog called “Les Comrades du S”.

Serge, now 33, was injured by a grenade shot and his evacuation, amid violence and tear gas, took nearly 80 minutes, causing him a lung infection. He remained in an induced coma for six weeks before being transferred to a rehabilitation center.

“After a failed operation due to an infection last October, [il] was operated on again,” his friends said this Monday. The objective of this “cranioplasty” was to “reconstruct the skull struck by the grenade”. “Everything went well and the S has a working skull again!” It is a key step in its reconstruction process which has been reached,” rejoices the blog while deploring that “serious after-effects persist”.

“I will come back to fight one day”

This bulletin is published while a video “Off investigation” appeared at the same time on YouTube. It seems to be from a few weeks ago since the thirty-year-old appears there with a protective helmet and explains that he does not yet have his cranial prosthesis to protect his injury. Blue t-shirt, gaze focused on the camera, the former mid-mountain guide tells how his colleagues, by sending him photos of his previous life, helped him reconstruct his memory.

“There is still no definitive assessment of my after-effects,” says the man who will never hear in one ear again. “I knew that police violence was real but we never think that we will be next,” confides the Toulouse resident, who has lost none of his activism. “The engine of History is our struggles. (…) Part of my life was taken from me (…) But I will fight, I will do everything to become who I was again and will come back to fight one day alongside other people,” assures Serge Duteuil -Graziani.

On Sunday, the “Bassines non merci” collective announced that it intended to file a complaint against the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin for having “lied under oath” before a parliamentary commission of inquiry concerning the violent demonstration of March 25, 2023 in Sainte -Soline. “All citizens”, and more particularly those injured during the demonstration of March 25, 2023, are invited to join in this approach until May 1.
