Paris is the second most congested city in the world

Another podium for the city of Paris. According to the ranking published on December 7 by the Inrix institute, Paris is
the second city in the world where there is the most traffic jams on the roads.

By analyzing the data of 1,000 cities around the world over ten months, it appears that the French capital ranks behind London and ahead of Brussels. This classification is made according to the number of hours lost by motorists due to traffic jams. And at this little game, Paris gets 140 hours over the past year.

A trompe-l’oeil progression

Ranked 6th last year, Paris “wins” four places. The study puts forward a possible explanation by relating this progression to the consequences of Covid-19. Indeed, according to Inrix, public transport would have experienced a 42% drop in ridership in the first half of 2021.

But this rise in the ranking does not mean that traffic jams have increased in the capital. On the contrary, according to the study, Parisians even lose 15% less time in traffic. It is above all because other cities have seen the importance of their traffic jams collapse with the crisis that Paris is rising in the rankings, Bogota and Philadelphia, for example, which ranked ahead of Paris before the Covid-19 ( 1st and 5th) saw the time lost by their drivers drop by 51% and 37% respectively.

Another French city in the ranking, Lyon goes from 34th to 12th place despite a 2% drop in the time lost in traffic jams.
