In most work environments, system administrators are constantly faced with new challenges and software solutions. In the event of a tender the exact opposite is true. We were looking for a system administrator for Windows 3.11 – a 30-year-old operating system. Also strange: the position was advertised as a remote job. Apparently very old working methods were combined with quite new ones. The job advertisement is now no longer online.
The position was issued by the Gulp agency, which acts on behalf of an unnamed company. This is based in Erlangen and works with railway systems. This is probably the large Siemens group from Erlangen, which, among other things, builds driver’s cab controls for trains in addition to the trains themselves. The fact that knowledge of Sibas, short for Siemens railway automation system, is also an indication of Siemens as the client. Golem.de asked the Gulp agency and Siemens. Knowledge of MS-DOS is a given
But what should a Windows 3.11 professional do here? The customer is apparently looking for someone to help develop and maintain display software as an interface between the train drivers and the vehicle controls. “The result of your work is high-quality display software whose interfaces to the vehicle control and vehicle control technology function smoothly”writes Gulp in the advertisement.
Interested parties should above all have knowledge of the aforementioned Windows 3.11. Know-how in MS-DOS and Windows for Workgroups is also required. MS-DOS knowledge in particular should not be a problem for Windows 3.11 experts. The advertisement also speaks generally about knowledge of legacy operating systems. This may mean other Windows operating systems or old Linux versions.
