Obsidian Entertainment: Battle system of the role-playing game Hope Avowed presented

First we use a magic spell to make the enemy healer so slow that he can no longer supply his soldiers with fresh life points. Then we pull two old-fashioned pistols out of the holster and shoot everything short and small: This is roughly what the battles in Avowed could look like.

The role-playing game is currently being developed by the Microsoft development studio Obsidian Entertainment. A longer video presentation focused, among other things, on the combat system.

This apparently also differs from other comparable titles in that we can switch very quickly between different weapons and pieces of equipment and thus change our tactics.

That means something like a sword and shield for a thickly armored special enemy, then off to long-range combat with pistols, and at the end a cold spell for the boss, who shatters into ice cubes with one hit – that’s pretty much how you have to imagine it.

What is striking in the presentation and in the new trailer is the chic look of the title based on Unreal Engine 5. At the last presentation in June 2023, some inappropriate and exaggerated colors led to criticism, but now everything looks colorful – but still pleasing and harmonious.

Avowed: Platforms and Availability

The setting is the Living Lands area, which we enter as an emissary of the local ruler. On his behalf we are supposed to investigate an epidemic. We do this either as a human or an elf – there should be no other races when generating characters.

Similar to The Outer Worlds, also developed by Obsidian Entertainment (test on Golem.de), we are always traveling with two computer-controlled companions. There are multiple-choice dialogues, decisions with long-term consequences and the fights.

Avowed is scheduled to be released in fall 2024. The release is planned for Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC. The game will be included in the Xbox/PC Game Pass game subscription from day one.
