The show runs live on eurovision.de, on Erste and on ONE as well as on the ARD media library. Then it will be decided which act will represent Germany in the final of the ESC in Sweden on May 11th. Anyone who goes to Malmö will have equal parts of the audience and an international jury of experts in their hands. Barbara Schöneberger also moderates and welcomes these guests: last year’s participants Lord Of The Lost, multiple ESC participant Mary Roos, entertainer Riccardo Simonetti, pop star Florian Silbereisen, singer Alli Neumann and the “I want to go to the ESC!” coaches Conchita Wurst and Rea Garvey.

Acts in the German ESC preliminary round 2024

In advance, NDR had nominated eight candidates to sing in the program “Eurovision Song Contest – The German Final 2024” for the ticket to Malmö: Galant, Isaak, Leona, Bodine Monet, Max Mutzke, NinetyNine, Marie Reim and Ryk . The audience awarded the ninth and last free place in the preliminary round on February 8th in the show “I want to go to the ESC! – The Decision” via tele and online voting to Floryan, who prevailed against Anne Im and Luca M. Wefes .

The order of appearances in the German final was determined by the ESC editorial team for dramaturgical reasons and taking organizational and structural issues into account.

Voting system for “Eurovision Song Contest – The German Final 2024”

The winning act will be determined by the audience (tele and online voting) and an international jury vote. Both count for 50 percent each, just like in the international ESC.

  • First, eight international juries will evaluate according to the ESC scoring system (1 – 12 points, score 7 is omitted). In Spain, Lithuania, Switzerland, Austria, Great Britain, Sweden, Croatia and Iceland, five music professionals each evaluate the performances from the dress rehearsal from the previous evening. The totals are then converted back into 1 – 12 points. Here too, the score of 7 is omitted. The act that is in first place according to the jury vote has twelve points, the second ten, the third eight, etc.
  • The act that received the most votes in the audience voting (calls, SMS and online voting) gets twelve points, the second best gets ten points, etc.
  • Whoever has the most points in total wins. In the event of a tie for first place, the audience’s higher score will decide who goes to Malmö.

Search for the German ESC Act 2024

This year there were two paths to the German ESC final. Singers and bands could apply online via eurovision.de until October 15, 2023. A total of 693 applications were received. Most of the acts applied with their own songs, but some also only applied as singers. At the same time, NDR also addressed artists directly. All titles were initially evaluated by the ESC editorial team. An international panel of experts then also gave the top 32 a rating – in this case anonymously. Afterwards, the most promising acts had the opportunity to present their ESC suitability live in an audition.

“I want to go to the ESC!” – Boot camp with Conchita Wurst and Rea Garvey

15 acts were also selected in advance from all applications to appear in the six-part docutainment series “I want to go to the ESC!” fought with coaches Conchita Wurst and Rea Garvey for a place in the German ESC final. The first five episodes were available in advance ARD media library. In the live show of “I want to go to the ESC!” On February 8th, it was up to the audience alone via tele and online voting to decide which of the finalists made it to the preliminary round. Conchita went with us Anne and Luca in the race, Rea with Floryan. One day before the live show, Bibiane Z from Rea’s team had to cancel her participation due to illness. In the end, Floryan prevailed.
