It seems to have been a coherent narrative for years, which in turn is being told more and more: Any extremist or muddlehead, any hateful racist can let off steam on social media like YouTube, and the algorithms of these channels ensure that this radical content continues to flow more or less automatically spread as soon as a user clicked near them. But that’s not true, according to a research team led by political scientist and data scientist Annie Y. Chen from the New York think tank Cuny Institute for State and Local Governance in the current issue of the specialist magazine Science Advances.
